MSMWHS217 - Gas Test Atmospheres

There are no formal entry requirements for this unit. However, participants should:

• Be over the age of 18 years old
• Have basic literacy and numeracy skills
• Be physically capable of working in industrial or high-risk environments
• Have a basic understanding of workplace safety practices
• Be working in or entering industries where gas testing is required

Assessment includes a combination of knowledge-based questions and practical demonstrations. Students will be required to show competency in setting up, using, and maintaining gas testing equipment, as well as interpreting results and responding appropriately to hazardous conditions.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for individuals who can demonstrate current and relevant industry experience in gas testing or related high-risk work activities. Credit transfer may also be granted for previously completed nationally recognised units of competency where valid certification is provided.

While RPL and credit transfer recognise existing skills and qualifications, it is important to note that industry best practice recommends refresher training in gas testing every two (2) years. Due to the high-risk nature of atmospheric testing, ongoing training ensures workers remain up to date with current equipment, exposure standards, and safe work procedures.

Students and employers are encouraged to consider refresher training where prior competency may be outdated or where there have been changes to workplace requirements, equipment, or legislation. Our team can assist in determining whether RPL, credit transfer, or refresher training is the most appropriate pathway to maintain compliance and safety on site.
